Succeeding generations depend on us. We cannot rob them of their future.
—Ban Ki-moon, United Nations Secretary General, 12/12/07
The most well known definition of sustainability can be traced to a 1987 United Nations conference. It defined sustainable developments as those that "meet present needs without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their needs."
For tourism businesses, the definition applies to the community in which that business is located. Hotels and other tourism businesses can make a significant contribution to improving our environment and the health of our communities.
